OPPORTUNITIES

Are you looking to turn your hand to something new? What better opportunity than to consider volunteering at one of the wonderful local museums, galleries, houses or cultural collections that Ealing has to offer, or even somewhere a little further afield?

All opportunities are open only to members of The Arts Society Ealing.

The National Archives, Kew – Heritage Volunteering COPY-1 Project

The National Archives has a wonderful collection of artwork that was registered for copyright protection between 1862 and 1912.

The artworks can be the size of a cigarette card or a poster for a billboard, and everything in between. They range from commercial packaging and advertising to railway excursion posters and fashion plates.

Each artwork is attached to a registration form giving the details of the artist, the copyright owner and the date. These are all stored in large boxes which each has an average of 500 different items inside.

Many of these great places are looking for enthusiastic volunteers, either behind the scenes, or in public-facing roles, to help make their visitor experiences even more enjoyable. All relevant training, supervision and support will be provided, wherever you sign up. 

Locally for now, we know that Boston Manor House and Gunnersbury Park Museum are looking for volunteers, as are places further afield: The Emery Walker House and Garden, Leighton House and Sambourne House, Turners House and Strawberry Hill House, The Dickens Museum and Benjamin Franklin’s House.

Boston Manor House in Brentford is a Jacobean House built in 1623. It is reopening to the public in summer 2023, in its 400th anniversary year and after a five-year restoration programme which has seen it completely refurbished, with beautifully restored historic interiors, two community exhibitions galleries and an attractive café. There are eight fantastic volunteer roles on offer including Visitor experience, Walks, Tours, Photography, Costumed Interpretation, Digital Marketing and Research

Gunnersbury Park Museum opened in 1929 and has a large and incredibly varied collection of around 50,000 museum and archive items. Its diverse collection provides an insight into the heritage and culture of Ealing and Hounslow’s past and present populations. Gunnersbury is looking for Museum Stewards, as well as Park Rangers at the weekends and Gardening volunteers during the week.

If you are interested in The Arts & Crafts Movement (William Morris), then the glorious 1750 Emery Walker House in Hammersmith is the place to start. It is looking for Front of House Room Stewards & Guides. 

Leighton House in Holland Park and  Sambourne House in Kensington are both looking for Visitor Volunteers. Here you can discover the historical artist studio-homes of celebrated Victorian painter Frederic Leighton, and Punch magazine illustrator Edward Linley Sambourne.

Turner’s House (Sandycombe Lodge) in Twickenham is the only surviving building designed and lived in by the great landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. The house is an elegant Regency period property restored to its original appearance and open for all to enjoy. Turner’s House is currently looking for Volunteer Stewards to carry out a very varied role in the House.

Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham was created by Horace Walpole, it was his 18th century Georgian Gothic revival house, and now home to an increasingly important collection of paintings and objects.  Strawberry Hill is looking for Room Stewards.

Benjamin Franklin House is the world’s only remaining home of Franklin, where he lived in the heart of Georgian London between 1757-1775. Today the house has a Grade I heritage listing and the small museum has a range of flexible volunteer roles from Front of House, Room Assistants and Tour Guides.  

The Charles Dickens Museum near Holborn is looking for Room Stewards. Home to the author and his family from 1837-39, it is a Victorian home complete with furnishings, portraits and decorations owned by Dickens himself.

Volunteering can be very rewarding and fulfilling and most places are flexible with the hours they need you to be on site.
